Dressing Every DayFebruary 14, 2025 This year is sneaking past quickly—here we are on Valentine's Day—so Happy Heart Day to you all! I hope you are all doing something special, either for yourself or with someone you treasure! Walt and I are having pizza—homemade, which means extra cheese kielbasa (yes, there is such a thing as turkey kielbasa), and veggies.
One of the things I've
always done is dress for every day. I probably started doing that when I started my design business at home, and I might have a drop-in, although I didn't ever encourage that. I even had a client want to "drop by" to pick up a dress while another client was there. Uh-no! That didn't work! I had to set a rule with that client.
But I had to be presentable - every day. And it got me into a fabulous habit of at least combing my hair and putting on
something that reflected my mood for that day. Granted, that's not hard to do because everything in my closet has to earn its place there. I'm always culling out pieces that aren't being worn as regularly, and that's precisely the way I like it.
So I ran across this post on Instagram (@Hespokestyle, I don't know why but Instagram won't let me put in the
exact link - boo!) And he had some interesting comments on dressing for every day.
The thinking here is that this is respect for the people and place you are around and for yourself. Many of my professional students love their ponte pants just for this reason. My attorney clients all say that to be able to go into court with a nice
pair of pants and stand up and sit down in complete comfort removes one piece of anxiety, knowing that they won't be splitting out of their pants and can give complete attention to their client and the happenings in court. Being able to show respect to those around you is the ultimate language of clothing.
Dressing well also attracts positive attention, which goes into respect a little. I'm continually amazed at the complete difference in response from salespeople when I'm dressed more professionally than when I'm dressed in something too casual. When I
go into Home Depot after church dressed in my Sunday best, I have sales staff falling over themselves to ensure I find what I need. But when I go into the store with my baggy, beat-up pants and paint-stained shirt, it's all I can do to get someone to mix a paint color for me, even though I'm about as authentic looking as possible. It's the way of the world, and we may not like it, but it is what it is. So, dress up if you're going somewhere you need positive attention.
NOTE: This will immediately upgrade you to a first-class seat if there's an available vacancy!
Again, you may not like this, but sometimes we only have a few seconds to make a first impression. Someone who is dressed well, will always get the nod faster and more often than someone who's not.
When you dress well, you look competent. Again, these are my attorneys before a judge, even if it's in their chambers. They all tell me that 1.) they shouldn't have gotten a favorable judgment but did, or 2.) It shouldn't have been so quick, but it
was, and they know it was due to their appearance because there would be no other reason. Some people believe you don't have to dress up, and if you are dressing well, you always put yourself ahead of them. As well as competence, there is credibility, and you look organized. This is like a trifecta of benefits just from dressing well - before you even open your mouth.
When you have respect for yourself, you boost your confidence. This is one of the more remarkable and rewarding responses I get from my clothes. Part of it is that I made this magic on my back, which involved realizing an ethereal vision in my head.
To think that a few synapses of my brain cells can end up as a garment on my back sends me. It's a real high for me; frankly, I'm hooked! So, getting that endorphin rush from feeling good in my clothes - exuding confidence - can make my day!
So I make a point every day, even though all that I may be doing is simply writing or sewing that day - no appointments or not going out (will the ice ever end?), I decided to put on something that reflected my mood that day.
It maybe the classic
white shirt with my standard leggings,
Or a funky knit print from Marcy Tilton,
Or one of my favorite prints from a trip to New York - with flats on some days and boots on others.
But above all else, I am wearing something that allows me to see a client in an instant, run to the store, or simply talk on the phone—and yes, dressing well helps you sound better on the phone.
Pretty soon, this becomes second nature. But
then it helps to have a closet full of the most flattering, comfortable, and attractive clothing.

Tracking a fashion trend isn't all that hard after seeing a few of them.

NOTE: There are some folks who can't get my email, or it's sporadic, or something is hinky. I will always respond to any of you who send a private message, whether it's about the topic of the week or something else. If you don't get anything
from me, it's probably because the support@sewingartistry.com email is blocked, and even a private message can't get through. In that case, I'm on Instagram often, and you can always PM me at @sewingartistry. As a precaution,
please ensure I'm in your email Address Book and check your spam, junk, and trash folders. Some email clients get extra excited when they see emails coming into the Inbox that go to many other receivers. They automatically think it's trash or spam, and it never makes it to the Inbox. I must constantly check my spam and junk folders to ensure I'm getting the emails I subscribe to.
